Oh hey! I'm Q and I am a high school teacher in Chicago. I create resources for teachers of color and help teachers discover and enjoy their passions outside of the classroom so they can feel fulfilled in their personal lives.Yes, we love teaching and are devoted to our students- but we are people, too! During my 4th year of teaching- I started to think about the things that I no longer made time for: attending events, shopping (I said it!), reading literature that was not for teenagers, visiting my family....SLEEP. I started to think about the person that I was on the weekends or at night when I watched Scandal. I would ask myself: what am I passionate about? What gets me excited? What makes me happy? I love so many things, but I narrowed it down to three items that I could never tire of talking about: Black culture, students of color, and literature. That is how Rebrand Chicago was started. This blog is designed as a resource for teachers of color, buying Black, and going boldly in the direction of your gifts so you can change out world.
During my first year of teaching, I struggled to create systems and balance relationships, sleep, cooking (anything school related) outside of work. During my second year, I was in the process of buying a home and I was too afraid to leave my classroom and go through the process without teacher guilt. (I ultimately got through it- yay for new beginnings!). 3rd and 4th year consisted of adjusting to a whole new school culture and creating entirely new systems since my first school closed and I found myself unemployed and on the cusp of starting over. Towards the end of 4th and going into 5th- I was dealing with a lot of emotions about events that were beyond my control with no outlet to express them. I was disheartened by the loss of Trayvon and then the rapid succession of the loss of other Black lives. I was more confident in my teaching ability, but I began to worry that I wasn't good at anything else that wasn't teaching. I stopped dressing up for work because I was too stressed or too tired to shop and make myself feel pretty. So, I decided to jump into a world unknown and started to devote time to the other desires of my heart.
I teach, but I also blog. And travel. And have other things that I love to do. If that's you, then this blog is for you. I really hope that this blog, you, and I grow together.
Why connect with me?
Authentic Experience: At this point, I have over eight years in education and more than five years of experience in teaching. I am a recipient of the Golden Apple scholarship, so I have learned best practices and observed classrooms before I even started college. I taught middle school for two years (not for me!) and I am currently teaching high school literature (I love it!). Throughout my teaching career, I have only taught in populations that are composed of students of color. I teach Multicultural Literature which speaks to different cultures around the world and the neighborhoods that my students grow up in. Creating content for my students is wonderful, but I have also enjoyed working with and coaching newer teachers about the latest best practices and life hacks that come from living a balanced work life. This is why I am always figuring out the best ways to balance what I love with who I am. I have learned that the distinction between the two makes all of the difference.
